Dime Box Buy: 1991 Denny's Holograms #23 Wally Joyner

Here we have another "hot prospect" of the late 1980s that never quite ascended to superstardom.  Playing for the Angels, Padres and Royals can do that.  He certainly had a career that most anyone would love to have had.

COMC Mail - Three Gold Stars

After more than six months, I'm still trying to figure out "values" of Compendium cards.  COMC and eBay are the only gauges and numbers are not relatively consistent in my eyes.  What I do know is that there aren't too many copies of the gold parallels available out there.  Because of this, I likely value the cards higher than others.  Perhaps the fact that I have done the legwork for every gold card that I have plays a role in it.

This post is in honor of the three gold Dallas Stars cards that now reside with me.

2016-17 Compendium Gold #85 Tyler Seguin

2016-17 Compendium Gold #88 Antoine Roussel

2016-17 Compendium Gold #587 Stephen Johns
The Tyler Seguin and Antoine Roussel cards are going into the card show box.  The Stephen Johns is all mine.  I wonder how many copies of this actually exist.  It can't be more than a handful.

Old Acquisitions from a New Show

Not that the area really needs ANOTHER card show, but the new Fort Worth Card Show held it's first event earlier this month.  I stopped in to support the show and walked away with a few items.

There weren't too many sellers and it was a small room, but I was VERY impressed with the amount of people attending in the short amount of time I was there.  The next show will have more sellers.  Likely due to being in a different part of the metroplex, most of the attendees were folks that I did not recognize and I'm excited to see the show grow.

I only bought from two of the sellers.  My first handful of pickups were from Rich.

1994 Ted Williams Dan Gardiner Collection #DG9 Checklist
I picked this card up because of Michael Jordan in a Barons uniform.  I own a few of his cards in Barons or White Sox uniforms.  I don't own one basketball card of him.  I was born in Birmingham and have attended a few games as a kid when I'd visit town for the summer.

I wasn't paying attention and ended up with two copies of this card.  If I was going to make that error, I'm glad that it was on this card.  I was in the stands when Jordan hit his first home run.

1994 Upper Deck Minors #MJ23 Michael Jordan
The final card that I picked up was for the wifey's Dallas Stars binder.  As much as it pains me, Derian Hatcher was one of her favorite players.  Sometimes in life we just bite our toungues!
1994-95 Upper Deck #127 Derian Hatcher
The only other cards I picked up were from the show promoter's table.  A couple of them follow the above trend...

1995 Collector's Choice #500 Michael Jordan

1995 Collector's Choice Silver Signature #500 Michael Jordan

The final purchase was a set that I had a few cards from already and planned to complete.  At the price he was asking, I just bought the set so that I needed to give it no more thought.

Dime Box Buy: 2013 Topps Chrome X-Fractors #25 Hyun-Jin Ryu

I thought my scanner was bad when I saw this one.  Then I looked at scans of other X-Fractors on Sports Card Forum and many were about the same.  I learned today that X-Fractors just do not scan well.

COMC Mail - 2016-17 Upper Deck Compendium Chicago Blackhawks Series 2

Since I put the series 1 set together, I figured I should do the same with series 2.  I haven't decided on series 3 yet.  If you're not up on Compendium, it takes 50 of the base cards to combine up to a red.  I have a hard time believing there are more than a handful or so team sets out there.

2016-17 Compendium Red #354 Artemi Panarin
Artemi Panarin is no longer with the Chicago Blackhawks.
2016-17 Compendium Red #355 Niklas Hjalmarsson

Dime Box Buy: 1987 Mother's Cookies Texas Rangers #8 Tom Paciorek

As a man who is younger than Tom Paciorek was in this picture, and has shaved my head for more than a decade, I am jealous of that mane atop his head.

COMC Mail - Young Guns

On an earlier post, I showed the Stephen Johns Gold Foil Rainbow Young Guns.  There were other Young Guns in the shipment.

Yes, I picked up this many Stephen Johns Young Guns.  As cheaply as they can be had on COMC, I can (hopefully) sell them at shows and make a few bucks.

2016-17 Upper Deck Exclusives #481 Stephen Johns
On the Upper Deck ePack site, I got a hard-to-find, and desirable, card.  I sent everyone that had a Johns Exclusives an offer for it and one trader took it!

2016-17 Upper Deck Silver Foil #481 Stephen Johns
This was a card that I "made" by combining five Young Guns cards.  Most of the silvers I combined into golds, but I needed one copy of this.
2016-17 Upper Deck #225 Jesse Puljujarvi
Jesse Puljujarvi is a card that was very desirable on ePack, but I didn't feel people were offering enough to get from me.  So, I elected to send him home.
2016-17 Upper Deck #451 Patrik Laine
If you're not going to get an Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine is probably the card you want to pull.  There was no reason for me to attempt trading this on ePack, because I didn't want to trade down.  I already had two Auston Matthews Young Guns, so I didn't need to trade up.

I love ePack.

2017 Topps Series 2 Box Break with Baseball Every Night

Peter at Baseball Every Night did a box break of 2017 Topps Series 2.  I didn't jump in immediately but with only a few spots left the Rangers were still unclaimed so I jumped in.  They're my local team so I figured worst case I could throw them into the quarter box for the next time I show up at a card show.  Most vendors ask 50 cents for current season cards, so I will undercut them.  MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I didn't end up with the box hit, but the Ivan Rodriguez buyback is pretty solid.  Pudge is not forgotten and well-loved by the Rangers fans.

Thanks for the break, Peter!  I will probably get in on these if you have any more.

Dime Box Buy: 1989 Upper Deck #418 Steve Buechele

Why would I pick this card out of a dime box?

I do actually plan to get back to sending out autograph requests.

Mail From Night Owl

Night Owl was kind enough to send me some goodies!  If you don't follow him on Twitter, you should (@nightowlcards)!

The cards were a great assortment to enter different parts of my collection.  I'm working on the 2017 Gypsy Queen set.  I don't think I have any of the Will Clark cards and there was also a Russ Davis included!  I need to do some work on checklists, but there are only so many hours in the day.

Thank you so much, Night Owl!  The cards are appreciated and welcome additions to my collection!

Today's Card Show Spoils - A Great Vintage Acquisition

The lady had some things to do this afternoon, so I decided to make the hour-long trek to Plano and hit up the Dallas Card Show for this month.  I ended up spending more than I had planned (I planned to spend nothing), but such is the struggle.

I walked the room and there was a seller with a 1991 Topps factory set.  I planned to make him an offer but once I got back, it was gone.  The price was right but I didn't want to carry it around.  Oops!

The first purchase I made was a few cards from  3/$10 boxes.  I'm not showing them all because some will be sent to others and I want them to be surprises.

2002 Sweet Spot Classics Game Bat #BCR Cal Ripken
I picked this one up for myself.  I miss the good ol' days when relic cards actually were something.  This is certainly a flashback to those days.

2002 Topps Pristine Personal Endorsements #MT Marcus Thames
I don't follow baseball but I know Marcus Thames started out hot this season.  I had no idea that he could have a card from 17 years ago, but this is proof.  I guess I overpaid since you can get a copy of this for $3 on COMC, but it happens.  Ah well.

I picked the following card up from Leon, the owner of the Net54 site.  It will make it's way to a Cubs collector in time.  At that price and age, I wasn't leaving it behind.

1953 Bowman Black and White #12 Randy Jackson
The final three cards I picked up from Rich.  He offered to let me go through his boxes that he'd not priced yet.  I'm thrilled that I took the time.  Neither of us was sure what the book value was on these, but a number was thrown out and accepted.

1954 Bowman #64 Eddie Mathews

Dividing the price paid by the three cards I purchased, I likely slighty overpaid for this one.  It's a card of a Hall-of-Famer and I made up for any overpayment with the other two cards.

1933-34 V357 Ice Kings #12 Nels Stewart

1933-34 V357 Ice Kings #12 Nels Stewart (back)

Even in poor condition, I was thrilled at the price I got this at.  I had no idea of the value or anything about Nelson Stewart.  It turns out that he is a Hall-of-Famer, enshrined in 1952.  It also turns out that high BV on this card is $600.  Despite the condition, I got a deal.  Have I mentioned that I'm thrilled to add this card to my collection?

1933-34 V357 Ice Kings #42 Sylvio Mantha

1933-34 V357 Ice Kings #42 Sylvio Mantha (back)
This Sylvio Mantha card is in much better condition and very good shape in general.  I have no idea what it might grade, but it's more than 80-years old, so it doesn't matter to me.  Mantha is also a Hall-of-Famer.  High book value is $200 on this one and with the condition, I got even a better deal than I did on the above card.

I've been fortunate to come into a few vintage hockey cards at fantastic prices.  The trend is continuing!
