Back, With Buybacks

It's been awhile, so who knows if anyone will even see this.  I'd been posting everything on my other site, Bean's Ballcard Blog, for awhile.  Then there was no posting anywhere.  My plan is to post my PC stuff here and more high level things there.  I'd be extremely grateful if you'd just sub to the BBB blog by just entering your email.  It's on the right side of the page up top.  You'll get notified any time I post.  

Anyway, on to yesterday's mail.  I received a PWE from Jon of A Penny Sleeve For Your Thoughts.  I knew it was coming and knew what was inside, kind of.  He messaged me that he had some buybacks for me, if I was still collecting them.  I haven't done much with them in awhile, but hope to again soon.  Hopefully I'll be getting back to being a collector again soon.  

Thanks for the well wishes, Jon.  I'm doing much better after my minor health scare a couple months ago.  Guys, make sure that you're consistently seeing your doctor(s) and taking care of yourself.  Not doing so hits you suddenly and it sucks!  

If you know me, you know that 1987 Topps will always be one of my favorite sets.  That was the first year I collected and I built multiple Topps and Donruss sets.  I was new to baseball but was a Braves fan because my southern family (who gifted my my first cards) were all Braves fans.  I thought his last name was weird so this card is memorable.  To this day, I've never met another "Olwine."

Ron Hassey will always be an Oakland Athletic to me.  Sorry, not sorry.  I love all of the 1980s White Sox uniforms, though.  

The 1980s was the best decade of Topps designs and 1984 is one of my favorites.  I can't explain why, but I've been drawn to it since I was a kid collector.  Not sure what year these 65th Anniversary cards were inserted into packs, so I'll have to do some sleuthing.  

This Doyle Alexander was the final card in the envelope, and my favorite.  Living in Arlington now (I can be the to stadium in ten minutes) has made me fall in love with some of the Rangers old logos. I may not be into baseball anymore, but I do have a healthy respect for the past.  

I hope you enjoyed the quick look inside the PWE.  I'm hoping to post more soon, though some (or most) may be videos.  Hopefully you'll watch.

Thanks to Justin, I have four new Topps buybacks in my collection.  He reached out to me on Twitter asked for my address and nothing else in return.  Collectors like Justin are what's right in a hobby that has a lot of "wrong" associated with it.  I will have that Griffey out to you soon, Justin!

This card is definitely my favorite of the four.  I'm sure Shane would love to get it through our buyback exchanges, but this one may remain mine for awhile.  I love the old Milwaukee uniforms, have grown fond of 1990 Topps and I love fielding images.  Sorry, Shane! 

I love this one as well.  I live just minutes from where the Rangers play (and played in the early 1970s), but have never seen a palm tree in this part of Texas. 

You know it's a great group when my third favorite card is from my favorite set ever. 

You also know it's a great package when the one bringing up the rear is an All-Star card.  This envelope was full of buyback goodness.  Thanks again, Justin!

Rangers from ARPSmith's Sportscard Obsession

Less than a week ago, Adam of ARPSmith's Sportscard Obsession posted that he needed some sorting space and would send team lots to collectors that claimed a particular team.  There are no strings attached, but of course I will send him some cards back.  The only problem is that he sent WAY more than I ever expected and I'm going to need to pick up some cards for him! 

I got back to my desk yesterday after a couple of meetings and there was a HEAVY priority mail box on my desk.  I had no idea what it was, even after looking at the address.  As soon as I pulled the first team bag out, I realized what all was in the box.  WOW!

That pic doesn't do the cards justice.  Here's another pic that shows how tall the stacks are. 

The cards range from the late 1970s through last season.  Just about every notable Ranger of the last 30 years was in there.  Some of the names were Nolan Ryan, Alex Rodriguez, Ivan Rodriguez, Mark Texiera, Will Clark, Cole Hamels and Yu Darvish.  Not all the cards were mainstream, there were plenty of oddballs in there.  I had no idea what to expect, but I definitely didn't expect this! 

I will have a first package out for you soon, Adam.  Then, I will have to find some more things and get out a second one.  I might not be at a card show for a few months, though.  Thank you!

2017 Topps Series 2 Box Break with Baseball Every Night

Peter at Baseball Every Night did a box break of 2017 Topps Series 2.  I didn't jump in immediately but with only a few spots left the Rangers were still unclaimed so I jumped in.  They're my local team so I figured worst case I could throw them into the quarter box for the next time I show up at a card show.  Most vendors ask 50 cents for current season cards, so I will undercut them.  MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I didn't end up with the box hit, but the Ivan Rodriguez buyback is pretty solid.  Pudge is not forgotten and well-loved by the Rangers fans.

Two Card Shows, a Podcast and a Card

Today was a full day.  I hit up two card shows and made it home in time to see most of today's Indianapolis 500 qualifications.  It was a good day and I only bought one card.

I started out the day at the Beckett Media Card Show.  It was one of the FOUR card shows in the Fort Worth/Dallas area today.  I didn't count, but there were probably ten sellers, none of which I'd ever seen at any of our local shows.  I'm not complaining, as that means new product.  All the local shows are great, but it's the same sellers and same product in general.

The Beckett show was centered around on-site authentication from Beckett Authentication and on-site Beckett Grading service.  I met Marlin, who drove down from Kansas City to take advantage of the on-site services.  I've conversed with him online and he's also in the same Beckett Fantasy Baseball League that I'm in.  If you don't follow him on Twitter, click on his name above and give him a follow.  Marlin gave me a gift as a thank you for being the only team that he's beaten this season.

I sat down with Eric from Beckett radio and did an almost 30-minute segment with him.  We chatted about wrestling, ePack, collectors that complain about every and some other random topics.  It wasn't my first (or second) time on the show and I hope that it won't be my last.  The link is below for you to listen in.  You also should follow them on iTunes and listen to the weekly show, if I do say so myself.





I only made one purchase at the show and it wasn't a card.  I picked up the latest Beckett Vintage Collector.  It's my favorite magazine in the Beckett family.  There is some pricing in the magazine, but it's much heavier on articles, which I like.  I've learned about many sets that I knew little about since the first issue.

I stayed at the show MUCH later than I wanted to.  When I got to my car I took a look and found that Indianapolis 500 qualifications weren't going to begin (due to weather in Indianapolis) until 3 p.m.  I decided to stop off at the weekly card show at Duane's Sports Cards on the way back since it's close to home, and Roger Neufeldt was set up and selling.  I only picked myself up one card.  It wasn't from Roger, or vintage.  I paid only a buck for it, but I was thrilled to find it.  It's the kind of card that if it's on COMC, some douche canoe is going to want $25 for it.

I opened a bit of this product in 1995 and never got any of the golds.  I have one now!

If you're local, I recommend that you give this show a try, or a second one.  They've moved some things around and there is certainly from fresh product there and it looks a lot more full.  I know that I need to go back soon and start digging to work on others' want lists.  I may or may not have picked up a few cards today for others, but you'll never know.

DBBD: 1993 Whataburger Nolan Ryan

Today it's a 2-for-2 special.  Here in Texas we love our Whataburger and we love some Nolan Ryan.

I tried to find the local commercial he's in that makes the wife crack up every time.  I can't even remember what it's for, but you just get to hear Express say "cracks are bad" with that Texas drawl.
