My Panini Problem -or- Saturday Show Spoils

I headed to the card show Saturday with one goal in mind.  I wanted to sell off the majority of the modern cards that aren't staying in my collection.  I've come to realize that if I'm not going to miss it if it's gone or if there's not a story behind it, I don't need it.  I just don't enjoy accumulating as much as I have the last 30 years.  I want to keep things that mean something to me.  

I came home with the cards, but I may meet up next weekend with someone interested in buying out the cards.  My fingers are crossed.  

I also came home with one more card than I went with.  I'm happy to add a Kyzir White to my Mountaineer collection.  I've come to the point where I'm happy just having one card of former players, so White is checked off the list unless I find an upgrade (the cracked ice look is nice).

My Panini problem?  You guessed it.  It's a damn sticker auto.  To me, they are worse than redemptions.  If I was an NFL card collector, I would be pissed off all the time with the amount of stickers they use.  Luckily I'm only interested in a handful of cards a season, so I can deal (thank you to my blood pressure medication!). 

I (over)paid $5 for this, but it was nice to pick it up in-person and get it out of the way.  I paid more for gas to-and-from the show and the show admission than I spent at the show.  That's not necessarily a bad thing.  I'm not complaining.

2000 Marc Bulger Quantum Leaf Infinity Green -or- A Rare eBay Purchase

Last week I posted about an envelope from Dennis and mentioned my love for the 2000 Quantum Leaf football set.  While writing it, I checked on eBay to see if there were any parallels available of the one he sent me.  

There was a parallel and even though it was more that I thought it should be, I bought it.  I don't buy much on eBay these days.  I think I'm averaging less than two items a month so far this year.  Of my last four purchases, this is the only one that was even a card.

I have to say, I still like the look of the base card better.  It's because the base cards are blue, no doubt.  Leaf made three parallels and the other two colors I need for the "rainbow" are red (/35) and purple (/15).  Since the cards are almost 20 years old, I'm not holding my breath that I will ever see one.

A Surprise From Dennis

Some of you may know (if you follow me on Twitter and saw) that I lost my job last week.  Not that I NEED to, but since I did, I've not bought anything since.  So, it was really nice to see an envelope from Dennis of Too Many Verlanders and Too Many Manninghams in my mailbox the other day.

This is a great way to start!  I've slacked off on picking up Mountaineer cards the last couple of years and I can't even recall if I have a Wendell Smallwood card.  I might, but I might not.  He's pictured in his Mountaineer uniform, so I can handle the Eagles logo. 

2005 Topps Draft Picks & Prospects - Chrome Gold Refractors #158 Kay-Jay Harris 

I love these cards and this set.  It could be because there were three Mountaineers, I dunno.  These refractors are also more shiny than many, at least to my old eyes.  I dig them!  I'm also looking for the black refractors /25 if anyone has them hidden away in a closet!

This one isn't just new to me, it's one that I don't recall ever seeing before.  You'd think that wouldn't happen, but with the amount of cards being produced these days...

2000 Quantum Leaf #342 Marc Bulger

There were some fantastic football card designs among the 2000 releases but this may have been my favorite one.  There were also red, green and purple numbered parallels, but this base is my favorite because it's blue.  It's not navy like the uniforms, but I can't nitpick.

2012 Bowman Platinum - Prospects Purple Refractors #BPP15 Jedd Gyorko

This was certainly a pleasant surprise!  I don't actively go after Gyorko cards because there are just too many of them out there.  I will pick up any that I can at shows and through trades, though.  I had the base, refractor and red refractor, but this is one that I didn't have.  Thanks, Dennis!

This card shows how deeply into my "things I collect" list that Dennis dove.  I lived in Indianapolis for almost a decade and Schilling is one of the few NHLers that originate from there.  Hence, he became a PC.

1998-99 SP Authentic - Power Shift #93 Mike Maneluk

This is from my hockey "lost years" where I wasn't paying much attention or collecting.  It will go nicely into my Blackhawks binder and be the lone card of a guy that I'd never heard of.  I like it!

I'd never given the Bowman buybacks any thought outside of any player collections that I might need them for.  Now that I have these, I'm thinking about considering them for my frankenset.  I love both of these Bowman designs and an inaugural year Marlins card would be a toughie to beat out to get into my set.  I think Dennis did more for me with these than he may have thought!

COMC Show & Tell - In-Hand & Not My Cup of Joe

I don't recall when, but at one point last year, Upper Deck released a Turkish basketball set on their ePack site.  I have no interest in basketball, but took a look at the checklist just in case.  There was one former Mountaineer on the checklist so I checked out the physical cards, bought a few packs, made a few trades and combined up to create two parallel cards, and traded for two more. 

On the site, Upper Deck made the cards look significantly different (you can see the two cards here on COMC).  Unfortunately, in-hand, there's very little difference.  To be honest, I am kind of guessing which pattern is which.  It's frustrating, but at least I have a couple of copies of Joe Alexander cards that are a little different. 

I've lost interest in basketball since WVU moved to the Big 12 and Alexander was my last real "favorite" Mountaineer.  After the cards, you can see a clip of my favorite highlight.  The dude was awesome!

I believe that the first card scanned is the regular rainbow card.  This card had to be "built" by combining ten copies of the base card on ePack.  The second one is the patterned rainbow, I think.  These cards are parallels that were actually in packs.  In my limited packs, I ended up with another player from this insert set and one other insert.  I was able to trade both of them for Alexanders. 

I could have just waited and bought the cards cheaper on COMC.  However, I was really enjoying ePack at that time (but spending way too much money) and there's something cool about knowing you did actual work to get a card in-hand.  I don't regret it at all.

Sportlots - Members Only

This is a one-card post (and mailday) that was part of my most recent Sportlots order.  I liked the "Members Only" cards in 1991, but these are just "meh."  I had to have it for the Darrell Whitmore collection, despite not being a fan of it.

I pulled for the Marlins in the early years because Whitmore played for them.  I had some shirts (Starter brand, of course!) and a snap-back cap when snap-backs weren't cool.  I was even wearing a Marlins shirt in one of my middle school yearbook pictures.  I may have to dig that up for a future post.  Buying all these Whitmore and rekindling my love for the teal colors actually got me to go to Lids and buy one of the teal Marlins hats!

This card is the 46th unique Whitmore in my collection.  There are just 22 more that I need per Trading Card Database, but I know there are more.  I have at least one card that isn't listed, so I'm going to have to find a checklist and get it entered into the system.

Sportlots - Darrell Whitmore Museum Collection

I didn't appreciate Pinnacle enough in the 1990s.  Partly my own observations and partly reading about Mario's (of Wax Heaven) obsession has allowed me to appreciate Pinnacle more.  My newest Darrell Whitmore card is an example of why.

I'm pleasantly surprised about how well the scan of the card came out.  At the same time, I'm looking at it sitting on the table as I type this and the blue pops even more at this angle.  You may not agree that Museum Collection cards were some of the best parallels of the 1990s.  Not everyone can be right! 

The next Whitmore card will put me at over 2/3 complete on his cards.  It will also put me past his stolen base percentable highlighted on the card above.

Sportlots - Micro Darrell Whitmore

I have to admit, I've never seen one of these single in person.  I think I've seen the complete sets and how small they are, but just one single card makes them look so much smaller.  For reference, I left the card in the toploader that it was shipped in.

Sportlots - Whitmore Gold and a Seabol

A couple of weeks ago I scanned and cataloged all of my Darrell Whitmore cards on Trading Card Database.  It was something a long time coming, since I knew there were plenty of holes in the player collection.  Once that was done, I was able to hit Sportlots and knock some cards off the need list.

Whitmore played in three seasons with the Marlins, but he will always be a football player to me.  As a freshman in 1998, he was a vital part of the Mountaineers secondary.  He broke his leg in the last game of the regular season (which I was in the stands for) and missed the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame (the first disappointment of many as a WVU fan/alum).

He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians, but taken by the Marlins in the expansion draft.  His first major league cards arrived after the 1993 season started and I tried for years to pick up one of each of his cards.  Many of those cards I picked up 25 years ago are still a part of the collection. 

He lives outside of Indianapolis (the final place he played in his professional career) and while I lived there, I hoped he would make it to one of our alumni group's events, but never did.  I would have been a nine-year old all over again.

I added the three Whitmores and the Scott Seabol from Sportlots for less than a buck each.  It doesn't sound like a deal at the top level for someone that maybe one blogger that will read this has heard of, but there were a couple of parallels included.

This one is the card that has me most excited.  Anyone that collected during the mid-90s knows that the gold scripts weren't that easy to come by.  I'm sure that in the 1990s I'd have paid well more than the $1 I got it for.

Also in my envelope was a parallel that pre-interwebz wasn't easy to come into if you were looking for a particular player.  I was more than happy to find this for a buck, less than any of the four listed on COMC currently.

Some loved Pacific, some hated Pacific.  Count me among the former.  There were some popcorn farts like the "Pacific Online" set and some sets with parallels that are tough to decipher, but all-in-all, I loved Pacific.  

Adding these three Whitmores to my set leaves me 25 cards short of having all his cards (per TCDB). 

The final card I picked up was a Scott Seabol card that I want to send away for a TTM autograph.  He's another of the few former Mountaineers to play in the majors.  At the time he made his major league debut (April 8, 2001), he was the lowest drafted player to play in the bigs.  He was drafted in the 88th round (1716th overall) of the 1996 draft. 

He played just that one game for the Yankees, but that was enough to get him 20 major league cards (including the one below).  He did make it back to the majors and played in 59 games in 2005 for the Cardinals.  I find it fascinating that one game in 2001 got him 20 cards, but 59 games in 2005 got him no cards.  It speaks to the prospecting that happens in the hobby.

Seabol will be the hitting coach for the Charleston RiverDogs this season, and I'm going to send this there in hope of a TTM success.  I'm a fan of the non-glossy finish on the cards.

Cards from the East and Wes

A couple weeks ago, Wes (of Willinghammer Rising fame) posted some cards for trade on Twitter.  It was simple - claim a card, or cards, and send him something back.  I already had a couple of things to send him, so I looked through to see if there was anything that caught my eye.  If there wasn't, I planned to drop his cards in the mail soon, so this was just a bonus. 

I only claimed one card and Wes quickly replied that it was mine.  I believe that I was a few hours late to the party and I'm glad there aren't too many Indians card collectors.  I snagged this...

Baseball bores me and I don't watch it anymore.  However, it was the first sport that I loved.  After being a Braves fan (because of Dale Murphy) and then Giants fan (Will Clark), I settled in the early 1990s on the Indians.  My parents bought me a stereo and I could get WKNR out of Cleveland.  I spent many evenings listening to Tom Hamilton and Herb Score call Tribe games.  I have a few autographs of mid-90s Indians, but I need to get more.  I'm thrilled to add this to my collection.

After all was said and done, I asked Wes if anyone had claimed one other card I was interested in.  The answer was no and I was also able to acquire this one...

I understand the reasons why, but I feel that Gary Sheffield is one of the most underrated players of my generation.  I won't say he's a favorite of mine or anything.  Picking up this card was about the set and not the player.  I have a few cards from this set (Gwynn, Will Clark, and Kenny Lofton) and if I ever see them cheap, I pick them up.  If I ever acquire enough, it might be worth making a project. 

Wes also included three other cards...and they are some goodies!  Obviously he reads my blog (or Twitter) and knows that I'm a West Virginia alumnus. 

2014 Leaf Metal Draft - Prismatic Blue #BA-CS1 Charles Sims 

There is a very loud group of people out there that complain about companies without logo licenses producing cards.  You're allowed your opinion, but you know what they say about opinions.  I think this is a beautiful card.  The blue version of the cards makes it that much better with a Mountaineer.

Oh, and it's numbered out of 50.

The Mountaineer trend continues with the second card added.

2015 Topps Chrome - 60th Anniversary Xfractor #T60-KWH Kevin White 

I'm not an NFL guy, I'm a college guy.  I don't care for Mountaineers in NFL uniforms (unless there's nothing out there in the WVU uni)...BUT I really like this one!  I love Topps Xfractors.  I was just sitting here looking at this card and turning it and it reminds me of the first time I saw Fleer Metal cards.  I think it was 1993, maybe?  The momentary reflection back to a much more innocent time was very nice. 

So, yeah, I dig this card.  I dig it to the point that I may look into getting as much of the rainbow as I can.  I'll never have that Superfractor, but what can you do? 

Competing the Mountaineer trifecta is one that I really like because of the color.  Anything Mountaineer related in blue is good and this one looks great combined with the Bears color scheme.

The Mountaineer Mine #4 - Bruce Irvin

WHO:  Bruce Irvin

WHEN:  2010 - 2011

WHERE:  from Atlanta, GA

WHY (this card):  One of the biggest disappointments in the hobby ever, for me, is that the card manufacturers missed the boat on Bruce Irvin.  No card of him in a WVU uniform exists that I know of.  Irvin endeared himself to the Mountaineer faithful and he is one of the most popular players of the last decade.  I chose this one because of it's low numbering, and it's a normal size card.  Irvin's Topps rookies pictured him in jersey #00.  That's cheap garbage.  My favorite Irvin card won't fit into a standard sheet.  You'll see it in the next few days.

HOW (he's remembered):  Bruce Irvin is one of the most beloved men to ever wear the ol' gold and blue.  I just wish he'd played more than his final two years at West Virginia.  He was a speed pass rusher that you just don't see often.  His first season he had just 21 tackles, but 14 sacks.  Teams realized they had to double and triple team him when they could and he registered just 8.5 in his senior season.  Every time he made a play at Mountaineer field, the mountains reverberated with fans cheering "BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!"

When he was drafted 15th overall in the 2012 draft and there were plenty of people asking "who" and.or criticizing the pick.  Well, he's registered 30 sacks in his career, three interceptions and two touchdowns.  Some of the players drafted ahead of him - Robert Griffin, Trent Richardson and Justin Blackmon.  I guess it wasn't that bad of a pick, eh?

I can't narrow it down to just one Owen Schmitt card that I want to keep.  When all is said and done he may be the one that I keep the most cards of.

If you read yesterday's post, I posted a YouTube clip of when "The Runaway Beer Truck" was born.  This card is from that run.  If you look closely, you can see the Oklahoma defender in the background.  This is almost the card that I selected for the project.  I'll never be completely confident in the decision that I made.  I have four copies of this card and probably need to get to nine, just so I can fill out an entire sheet.  I don't have any of the other parallel levels, I love this one because it's blue.  The only "bad" about this card is the Seahawks helmet on it.  I wish it was a WVU helmet.

This isn't normally the kind of card I would keep.  Schmitt is not pictured in his West Virginia uniform.  It's staying in the collection because the design used was copied from the 1894 Mayo Cut Plug set.  Owning a card from that set is something I hope to make happen eventually.

This card is another that doesn't really "fit" with my collection.  It has some sentimental value and that's why it remains.  I picked this up just a couple of days before I moved from Indianapolis to Texas.  It was my last card purchase there and for me signifies closing the door on that time of my life, and how much happier I am now.  I never noticed until today, but they have his school in 2003 listed incorrectly.  Schmitt didn't play four seasons at WVU.

We return to the Mountaineer cards now.  I don't like that this card is a sticker auto, but it's the only one I'm keeping that pictures Schmitt in the gold uniform.  I miss this look.  I have a couple of copies of this one.  

2008 Press Pass - Autographs Bronze #PPSOS Owen Schmitt 

All I'm going to say about this one is that I miss Press Pass.  As a college collector, they offered things that wouldn't have been seen otherwise.  They also were good about understanding what players might have some secondary value and including them.  I salute you, Press Pass.

When I spoke on the phone last week with Upper Deck's Chris Carlin, I told him that canvas cards are one of the best things in the hobby.  I wasn't giving him lip service, I truly believe it.  I miss Upper Deck producing football cards.  Losing the NFL license didn't completely break my heart but now that they've lost the CLC license, WVU cards just aren't the same to me.

I've heard more than a few people in the hobby say unflattering things about SAGE, and it pisses me off.  They certainly have their place in the hobby.  If all you're doing is trying to make money, either short or long-term, SAGE isn't for you.  History has shown this.  However, they provide affordable autographs of some top-tier players collectors might not otherwise be able to afford.  Also, they include players that may not get an autograph from any other company.  As a college guy, I love this.
