Thanks, @dubmentality!

When I got home from work Monday, there was a bubble mailer waiting on me.  I'd received everything in transit to me at work that day (I have some things sent there) and knew the bubble mailer was unexpected.

It was from Joey, who many of you know as @dubmentality on Twitter.  I hoped to meet up with him when he was in town for the Industry Summit, but things just didn't work out.

Joey has opened a few blasters of Upper Deck Hockey and I mentioned to him that I'm working on the set, complete with inserts.  I think my mind has changed on that, but this is still a win for me.  I will still attempt to put the Canvas set together, and that's what was in the envelope.

Thank you for the surprise mail, Joey!  You need to let me know what cards you need to finish off your Series 1 set so that I can send some cards your way.

If you shop online and haven't signed up and used ebates yet, you're missing out.  I also use it on eBay to get money back from purchases there.  Between referrals and cash back, I've gotten over $150 in a year.  FREE CARDS!

If you're on Twitter, please give me a follow.  You can also find me on Trading Card Database.  I love trading cards, when it makes sense.  Happy collecting!

Mail from Dub Mentality

Recently Joey of the Dub Mentality blog fame, posted about buying some late 80s football wax packs.  He ran a contest on Twitter for some of them and I was the winner.  Here is the late 80s goodness that was in my envelope.

If you don't read Joey's blog, that needs to change.  It is one of the best reads I know of in the trading card blogosphere.  Thanks for the cards, Joey!

If you shop online and haven't signed up and used ebates yet, you're missing out.  I also use it on eBay to get money back.  Between referrals and cash back, I've gotten over $100 in about seven months.  FREE CARDS!  If you're on Twitter, please give me a follow.  Happy collecting!

Gypsies & Mountaineers

I received an unexpected bubble mailer from Joey at the Dub Mentality blog this week.  It looks like he actually read my "TRADE ME YOUR 2017 GYPSY QUEEN!" post and I'm grateful for that.  He was just the second one that replied to it.

I still need to get everything in order and update my needs list.  I'm sure that I will need some of these!

Joey also included some Mountaineers!

I can't lie.  I'm always going to wonder what could have been with Geno Smith, Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey.  I expected so much more from that team.  It hurts when your defense gives up 40 a game, though.

My favorite card from the envelope was one of a Mountaineer that I think many will forget in time.  Charles Sims was a grad transfer and played just one season as a Mountaineer.  He's not going to be at the top of any statistical lists, but he was a dynamic player and the most important piece of the offense in his one season in Morgantown.

Thank you for the goodies, Joey!  I promise to give them a good home.

If you shop online and haven't signed up and used ebates yet, you're missing out.  I also use it on eBay to get money back.  Between referrals and cash back, I've gotten over $100 in about six months.  FREE CARDS!  If you're on Twitter, please give me a follow.  Happy collecting!

Mailday from Dub Mentality

First things first, if you're reading card blogs and aren't reading the Dub Mentality blog, you are missing out.

I commented on his 1986 Donruss Retro Review how much I liked the image on the Reggie Jackson card.  I few hours later I received a message from Joey and he offered to send me a copy of it.
1986 Donruss #377 Reggie Jackson
There's just so much about this card that I like.  So many baseball cards have been produced over time and there are only so many pictures that can be used.  Guy pitching...guy swinging...tens of thousands of them look about the same.

The angle this picture was taken at was different.  The cropping didn't show just a full body shot or a picture from the chest up.  It's different.  How about those trees and that horizon in the background?  You don't see that on many cards.  I love the alternate Angels logo that they used.  I didn't notice it until now, but how about the fact that his hand is moving so quickly that it's blurry?  I don't hate it!  The combination of all those things make this a very visually appealing card to me.

Joey also included a handful of other cards from the set.  The names are all a who's who of my baseball youth.

I may have had that Dale Murphy card as a kid, but no longer do after one of my many card purges.  He was my first favorite player and I've been picking up cards cheaply as I find them.  Time moves quickly.  It would be hard for someone born just five years after me to understand just how big of a deal Darryl Strawberry was.  Pete Rose doesn't look right in any uniform other than Cincinnati.  Frank Viola was also a stud and it's sad that he's mostly forgotten about these days.

Thanks for the cards, Joey!  I have your address now and sometime down the road I will get you back.  You never know when.  Oh, and thanks to you I will never be able to look at 1986 Donruss cards without thinking of Max Headroom.
