Mail from Breakdown Cards

I sent Gavin (@breakdowncards) of Baseball Card Breakdown a couple of cards in a PWE a week or so ago.  The quickness that he replied (and I didn't send to him expecting to get something back) tells me that it's possible he'd already set aside a few cards for me.  It wasn't long at all that I received a PWE back with set needs and a buyback.

All six A&G cards, as well as the Wil Myers 87T design were needs for my sets!  WINNING!  I've been accumulating 1987 Topps buybacks, as that was one of the first two sets (along with 1987 Donruss) that I put together myself.  Sometime down the road, I will officially begin work on an 87T buyback set.  That is many, many projects down the road, though.

Thanks for the cards, Gavin!  I do appreciate it!

Saturday Show Spoils

It was card show day again today!  I didn't plan on picking up much and walked out with more than I planned to.  I walked away very happy though.

Before I went to the show, I stopped by Triple Cards in Plano.  They are one of the Topps Baseball Card Day participating stores so I wanted to stop in and claim my pack.  You can check out what I walked out with here.

When I first got to the show, Stephan was already there (with Angela) and he was digging through Rich's boxes of cards.  I'm not even sure he looked at other tables the entire show.  After chatting for awhile, I made my rounds.

I chatted up the gentleman that's promoting the new Fort Worth card show.  He will be moving the shows to Saturdays on some future dates.  I guess that means I won't be attending many since college football is just TWO WEEKS AWAY!

I talked with Nate momentarily.  He submits to BGS frequently and I need to get my Auston Matthews Canvas Young Guns submitted.  He looked at it for me a couple of months ago and believes it's easily a 9.5,  WINNING!

My purchase was from a seller that I've bought from before.  He always has an impressive 3-for-$1 box and I raided it again today.

The next two scans are cards I picked up off one of the regular sellers at local card shows.  I don't dig through his stuff often (he has SO much), but went through a few boxes today and picked these five cards up for $30.

It's been probably a year since I've picked up any cards for my 1955 All-American set.  It's fallen off the radar as I've learned more about other cards.  I believe another thing that keeps me from finishing it off is that there's just so many of the cards out there.  Dave puts "book" value on his cards and then everything is half that or less.  The Germany Schulz has a book value of $30 and this one is in great shape.  I was happy to pay $15 for it in that condition but his son told me $10.  YES, PLEASE!  Hindsight is 20/20, but I should have seen what he wanted for the other ones he has.  They would be doubles, but all would be set upgrades for me.

I actually bought the cards in the second scan at a different time and got them for $20.  The Will Clark has a canvas finish.  I picked this card up solely to send to Clark and have him sign for me.  I'm not striving to collect all cards of hometown hero Jedd Gyorko.  There's just too much and it's like pissing into the wind.  However, I do want to pick up any cards from the baseball sets I like (Heritage, Gypsy Queen and Allen & Ginter) and I didn't have this autograph yet.

I will likely never put together the 2000 Fleer Club 3000 Memorabilia set and this is the first one that I have acquired.  If anyone has any of them that they don't want, please let me know.  I don't have many Tony Gwynn cards, but I pick up some if I come across them at the right price.  Memorabilia cards are "meh" to me anymore but this one is from back when they were a much bigger deal.  I do still need a Tony Gwynn autograph.

I picked up the two cards below from Rich.  I probably overpaid for them (considering the Stautner condition), but I've gotten some good deals in the past and it takes the sting off it.

As I was about to leave and looked down at my watch, it was 20 after the hour.  It was just ten minutes until the hourly drawing for a $15 voucher to spend with any dealer.  I figured it was worth the wait, so I stayed.  Yup, my ticket number was drawn.  There was nothing I'd seen and REALLY wanted but passed on.

I had looked through Leon's T206 cards earlier and recalled that he had a few cheapies.  The Hobe Ferris card is a pretty common card in the set and it's not overly impressive.  However, I didn't have it and it was free.  Hard to beat that combination!  This is the 15th T206 in my collection.

It was a good day!

Dime Box Buy: 1993 SP #275 Carlos Delgado

Something I find fascinating is the cards that I find in dime boxes that at some point sold for much more than a dime.  Carlos Delgado was a feared slugger for a few years.  I wonder how much this card went for at it's peak.

Marking Another Off the Most Wanted List

After picking up quite a few T206 cards in a short period of time, I knew it had been awhile since I purchased one.  As I sat down to write this, I discovered it has been four months.  How time flies.  It was well worth the wait because I was able to knock a card off the Most Wanted List.

My preference on T206 cards is to pick up ungraded ones.  I want to be able to put them into sheets.  They look great in them.  Last week there was a raw copy of this card up for auction on eBay.  I didn't win it, but then this one came available on Net54 for only $20 more than the auction ended at.

1909-11 T206 Scoops Carey
Scoops Carey attended my alma mater (West Virginia University) before playing professional baseball.  He played for Baltimore, Louisville and Washington during his four season in the major leagues.  Carey played in the minors for the final eight years of his career.  He is pictured here as a member of the Memphis Turtles of the Southern Association.

The Southern Leagues cards were printed in much shorter supply, bringing a higher price tag.  Unfortunately the three cards I'm most interested in (that aren't huge names) are all Southern Leaguers.  Woodie Thornton also attended my alma mater and Carlton Molesworth is the player pictured as a member of the Birmingham Barons (I was born in Birmingham).

The card cost me more than a blaster, but less than most modern hobby boxes.  I'll always appreciate this more than any "hit" I may get and this card is all but guaranteed to retain it's value.  That's a win-win.  It's the 14th T206 card in my collection.

Not A Wax Or Gum Stain - So What Is It?

I decided to pick this card up just because of whose card it is.  It's Twitter's own John Bateman!

What's interesting to me is the back of the card.

At some point, whether in a pack or a box at some point in the next 50 years, the 1966 Tim McCarver Rub-Off was behind it.  It appears they did actually rub off.

So, what do we call this "stain?"  There have to be many more of these out there.

Mail from $30 a Week Habit

When I arrived home from work on Monday, I saw one of those beautiful yellow envelopes on the table waiting for me.  I've been on a bit of a buying refrigeration, so it was certainly a sight for sore eyes.  The contents were 15 cards from Robert of the $30 a Week Habit and My PCs - One Card at a Time blogs.  The 1990s hockey cards packed quite a punch!

1995-96 Topps Power Lines #4PL Patrick Poulin/ Jeremy Roenick/ Tony Amonte
I'm sure that I has this card in 1995, but after one of the many card purges I made in the late 1990s through the mid 2000s, it was gone.  Thrilled to have another copy of it.

If you didn't know it, Jeremy Roenick was my favorite player as a teen.  I'm slowly piecing back together a PC of him (Blackhawks cards only).  I know that the term "super collector" has been a thing over the past decade or so.  I hadn't heard it before, though I guess you can say that I was one as far back as my teen years.  When Roenick was traded from the Blackhawks, I had almost every card produced of his that I knew of (bear in mind, this was pre-internet), as well as all of his Starting Lineup Figures and a couple of autographs.

1994-95 Upper Deck Predictor Canadian #C19 Jeremy Roenick

I miss Predictor and You Crash the Game cards.  To me, they were the original "interactive" cards. They are one of the things that Upper Deck created that changed the hobby.  I don't understand why they don't exist any longer.  Their MVP brand would be perfect for them.  It's a low-retail set and it comes out before the season starts.  What a great way to get kids interested in both the cards and the game of hockey itself.  What do I know, though?

My favorite thing about this card is the red border.  Anything Blackhawks with a black or red border is just beauty!

1995-96 Score Border Battle #10 Jeremy Roenick
I don't know that everyone will agree with me, but Score made some of the best hockey products of the 90s.  Everything from the base cards to the insert sets were fantastic.

1992-93 Ultra Jeremy Roenick #4 Jeremy Roenick

1992-93 Ultra Jeremy Roenick #7 Jeremy Roenick
I have a couple of cards from this Roenick insert set, but I don't know which ones.  Odds are I need both of them!
1990-91 Score (American) #179 Jeremy Roenick RC
So I need to modify my previous statement about Score.  Their first few efforts weren't all that great and were seriously overproduced by any standards not involving Pro Set.

1996-97 Collector's Choice Crash The Game #C20C Eric Daze
Once the Blackhawks traded away Roenick, Eric Daze was the new favorite and focus of my collection.  His cards also left my collection during one of the purges and I'm slowly acquiring his cards.  It's such a shame that his back couldn't hold up.  As a guy that has some back issues, I know they are no joke.  He had three surgeries in a five-year span.

The only three seasons he was able to play at least 80 games, he scored 30 goals in each (including a 38 goal season).  What could have been.  For his career, he scored 226 goals in 601 games.  That averages out to 31 goals per 82 game season.

Also included in the package were nine cards from 2017 Gypsy Queen for my set.  He even included the Mike Trout!  WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Thank you for the cards, Robert.  I already have some ready for you that will be on the way soon!
