Box O' Cards From Home

My Saturday was spent running around like a chicken with my head cut off.  My uncle (the one that got me into collecting cards) passed away overnight and I was heading to Birmingham for the funeral.  Mama was also headed in from West Virginia (where I grew up) and asked if I wanted her to bring the cards that survived the house fire three years ago.  Of course I did!

I had no idea what, or how much, to expect.  It turned out to be one plastic box. 

A month or so ago I posted about the plastic card boxes you can find at Walmart and how I had some as I kid.  Little did I know that I'd ever see one of them again.  This one was just a bunch of junk-wax era boxed sets.  I'm not too excited about most of the contents, but there are a couple of things I'm happy survived.  I'll be posting the contents over the next few weeks.  Hopefully y'all will enjoy the walk down memory lane with me.

It Arrived - MEOW!

I've been surprised that Alex DeBrincat Young Guns have sustained their value.  The last three years Young Guns prices have dropped on all but the top one or two players once the set made it to ePack.  They have still plummeted on the low-tier players, but this season there are a dozen or so that have remained higher.  I have my theory on why, but I'll save that for a Bean's Ballcard Blog post.

As luck would have it, I searched for this card with the most recently listed and found this one.  It cost less than the COMC asking price AND had free shipping.  I went ahead and snagged it.  I feel that eventually prices will drop and the $11 I paid will just seem stupid, but who knows?

2017-18 Upper Deck #221 Alex DeBrincat

This card doubles my Alex DeBrincat collection.  The fact that I have just two cards speaks volumes about how I feel about modern cards.  I'm cutting down on the amount of money I spend and the percentages have moved toward vintage and spending money for online trading shipping.

Birthday Blaster: 2017-18 Upper Deck Series 1

My birthday has meant more to me the last four years.  My lovely fiance and I share the same birthday.  Unfortunately she had to work that day, but it left me with a little time to myself.  I needed to return something to Walmart and since it was my birthday, I decided to treat myself to a blaster.

I was hoping that I'd finish off my base set.  Come to find out, my base set was already completed after a couple of trades on Trading Card Database.  Oops. 

There should be two Young Guns in each blaster and I still need plenty of them for the set.  My first was Pierre-Luc Dubois.  He's one of the better rookies, so I beat the odds on this one.  I knew that I wouldn't end up with two complete duds. 

My second Young Guns card was Calle Rosen.  His card is lower-end but I needed it for the set.  All things considered, I will count that as a win. 

I'm still trying to pick a copy of the Alex DeBrincat Oversized Young Guns card.  If anyone reads this and has one they want to trade for this Alexander Nylander, a Tyson Jost or a Tage Thompson, I'm your Huckleberry.

Season Of Giving Contest Winnings from @HoardingCards

If you're not reading Jason's (@HoardingCards on Twitter) blog Hoarding Cardboard you're missing out.  Throughout December he gave away plenty of cards.  All you had to do was comment on a post, then he used a randomizer to select the winner. 

I was fortunate enough to win on a few different days.  I had some sent to other collectors.  Eventually, I just had him send the last group to me and I will pass them on to others in time.

2018 Twitter Trade #1 - @stephler4

A few weeks back, Steph posted on Twitter that he was looking (and he still is) Ryan Spooner cards.  I had a numbered patch card from 2017-18 Artifacts that he needed.  I checked his eBay items for sale and found a card that fit into my collection, but it wasn't going to be able to be a one-for-one trade.  We agreed to an amount of Paypal for me to send.  I did and cards began moving. 

My card arrived in the mail today! 

I want any red-bordered Blackhawks cards that I didn't have.  I did not have this one, the 2014-15 O-Pee-Chee Platinum Red Rookie Signature.  It's numbered 24/50. 

When Teravainen was traded I got rid of most of his cards.  I kept his Draft Day Marks autograph because it was the best auto that I had and I wanted to keep one.  That one may go for more and be lower numbered, but this one is an upgrade in my book.  Thanks, Steph!

Rangers from ARPSmith's Sportscard Obsession

Less than a week ago, Adam of ARPSmith's Sportscard Obsession posted that he needed some sorting space and would send team lots to collectors that claimed a particular team.  There are no strings attached, but of course I will send him some cards back.  The only problem is that he sent WAY more than I ever expected and I'm going to need to pick up some cards for him! 

I got back to my desk yesterday after a couple of meetings and there was a HEAVY priority mail box on my desk.  I had no idea what it was, even after looking at the address.  As soon as I pulled the first team bag out, I realized what all was in the box.  WOW!

That pic doesn't do the cards justice.  Here's another pic that shows how tall the stacks are. 

The cards range from the late 1970s through last season.  Just about every notable Ranger of the last 30 years was in there.  Some of the names were Nolan Ryan, Alex Rodriguez, Ivan Rodriguez, Mark Texiera, Will Clark, Cole Hamels and Yu Darvish.  Not all the cards were mainstream, there were plenty of oddballs in there.  I had no idea what to expect, but I definitely didn't expect this! 

I will have a first package out for you soon, Adam.  Then, I will have to find some more things and get out a second one.  I might not be at a card show for a few months, though.  Thank you!
