2018 Trading Card Goals

Over the last few days I've seen a few blog posts recapping the successes of 2017 card goals.  Before this, I was thinking about my 2018 goals after commenting on a thread on Net 54.  In the last couple of days I think I've finalized them in my head.  I think. 

I'm one of the lucky collectors whose "other" is accepting of my hobby.  My fiance isn't keen on buying me cards, but she does support my hobby.  I don't let it get in the way of paying bills or anything like that.  It's a hobby for me, but I haven't let it become an addiction. 

Our plan is to get married on January 29, 2019.  That is a Tuesday, but we share a birthday and it's obviously a very special day to us.  We're not doing anything big, but still need to save up some money for what we want to do.  This is why my first 2018 collecting goal is spend less money in the hobby and put the money away.  I don't know how much money I put in this year, so my success will be a guesstimated pass/fail. 

My action plans are simple and easily achievable.  First, I will spend less money on ePack.  I don't enjoy it as much as I did months ago.  I don't spend as much time on there.  I can do it. 

The second thing I will do is to stop spending money on things that aren't strong fits into my collection.  I've successfully stopped the Walmart and Target impulse buys.  What I haven't stopped are the impulse buys at the card shows.  Too often I spot a deal and get sucked in.  It's caused me to come up with new projects that I don't need.  I've also bought many cards to trade or sell that I still have.  It's time to stop that.  I can do it!

The third thing I will do take no time at all.  I'm going to unsubscribe from most of the daily eBay saved search notices.  I'm keeping ones that are for tougher to find items.  Some of the general ones will be gone, most likely by the time you read this.

My second goal is to sell enough on COMC (you can see my items here) so that I can have the 300+ cards waiting to ship to me mailed.  I use the resell mode on COMC so when I buy a card, I don't pay the built in 25 cent fee on the card.  I have to pay when it's time to ship, though.  I need to get my account up to about $80 and get these cards home. 

There are cards I'd love to acquire in the next year, but most aren't easy to find.  A lot will depend on the items even coming up for sale. 

AUTO RACING

I would love to finish my T36 base set.  Right now I have 22 of the 25 cards in the set.  It really just comes down to availability. 

Another racing collector on Net 54 is also looking for a copy of the Barney Oldfield.  If it even comes available, I know that I will have to leave my financial comfort zone of T36 cards to get it.  

After reading a couple of books about Lloyd Ruby, I became a fan of his even though I never saw him race.  I want to add his 1962 Marhoefer card to my collection.  The cards aren't easy to come by and when they are available they aren't cheap.  I haven't seen a copy of the card come available on eBay and need to begin a deeper search.  I found a picture of the card, so I do know that it exists. 

BASEBALL

I want to add one of the two T206(ish) Scoops Carey cards that I don't have, in an SGC holder.  

I have the two most common copies already.  What I need to finish the run are the T206 Hindu back and the T213-1 Coupon copies.  Like most of the items that I am looking for, availability is the key factor.  These cards just don't surface often and when they do, I need to have money saved up for them.  

My other baseball goal is to start this same project with Woodie Thornton.  If I pick up one this year, I will be happy.  Every project has to begin somewhere.  

FOOTBALL

Much of the start of this post came from a Net 54 thread, so I may as well just copy and paste my comment from there.  

"1) I’d like to pick up a couple of National Chicle cards. I only have one, so it should be easy to get a couple of new ones.

2) I’d like to get to 80% complete on my 1955 All-American set. I’m at 69% currently."

Since then, I've thought of a third thing that I'd like to do. It likely won't happen in 2018, but I really want to add an 1894 Mayo Cut Plug card to my collection.  Of any of the things in this post, I feel this one is the least likely to happen.  

HOCKEY

I need to finish a couple of parallel Blackhawks team sets.  I love any Blackhawks cards with red or black borders and I really love Prizm.  The 2013-14 set had both a Red Prizm and Red Pulsar Prizm parallel sets.  I need to finish those off.  I need ten cards between the two sets, so it can be done.  

I've been passively working on the 2013-14 Score Blackhawks parallel team sets.  I want to make some serious progress on this project in 2018.  Each base card has a gold, red, black and (red) alternate back version.  I have most of the gold parallels.  The reds aren't too tough to find.  It's the black and alternate back parallels that are tougher to come by, and more expensive.  

For some perspective, I've never seen a copy of the Alternate Back Andrew Shaw come available.  They are likely sitting in common boxes somewhere and someone has no idea what they have.  The black parallel of Jonathan Toews is available on COMC...for around $40.  That may be the last one that I end up with!  

We shall see how it goes.  As long as I successfully spend less money this year, I am going to be happy.  Accomplishing any of the other goals is just an additional bonus.

A Set Builder's Friend

Set building is something I've gotten back into in the last year and I like to have them in binders.  I went more than a decade-long phase of not using binders and sheets.  A major frustration for me was that I couldn't use them for current modern day player collections because of new card thicknesses.  As I've gotten back into set building, that complication is no more. 

I don't like to actually sheet the sets up until they are completed or just a few cards from completed.  I have no idea what others do, but that's my thing. 

When I bought some Parkhurst blasters last week, I bought something along with them.  I had a few of these as a teen, but in one of the multiple card purges they left my possession.  Now that I'm back into set building, I'm thrilled to have one back.  I see a couple more in my future. 

In the cardboard set boxes, I dislike having to put space filler in an take it back out every time I add some cards.  The different sized compartments in this box help alleviate some of that annoyance.  Even leaving some empty space the cards don't move around too much.  For me, these are easily worth the $5 investment.  I'd prefer if the lid came completely off instead of being attached but at the price, you can't always get what you want.  

Does anyone else use these?  Maybe I'm the only grown collector that uses them.  Even if so, I have no shame in it.

Box Break & Review - 2017-18 Parkhurst Hockey #3

On to the third blaster of 2017-18 Parkhurst Hockey...

After box two, my set was 71% complete.  I only had one duplicate, but as the set comes closer to completion, the multiples become greater.  The struggle of set collecting...

Base Cards - 108 cards (36% of the complete set) with no duplicates.

Of the 108 base cards in the blaster, I needed 48 of them for my set.  After the blaster, my base set is now 87.3% complete.  I need 38 cards to finish off the set.

Box Break & Review - 2017-18 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Hobby Box

I was able to wrap up my work tasks with a full day left before Christmas vacation.  On the last day I decided to call it a day at 11 and head up to the LCS to kick off the holiday.  I hadn't picked up a box of Series 1 yet, so it was time.  I need one to put together most of the base set and I can fill in the holes from there.  

I didn't hit the big Young Guns card of the season or any other high-dollar cards, but that's okay.  I didn't buy the box to hit the lottery.  I beat the odds on a couple of cards and got a couple of the better Young Guns cards, making it a definite success.  

BASE CARDS - 165 cards (no duplicates) - 82.5% set completion

YOUNG GUNS (1:4 Packs) - 6

If I'm going to get six in a box and two are Josh Ho-Sang and Tyson Jost, I won't complain.  They aren't the top Young Guns, but aren't commons either.  Ho-Sang books $20 and Jost $15 (per Beckett).  The other four are $5 commons.  

UD CANVAS (1:6 Packs) - 4

The UD Canvas cards are some of my favorite modern cards.  My dream Upper Deck set would be a stand-alone, 600 or 700 card set of canvas cards.  It would combine the canvas feel with a set builder's set.  Every man is entitled to a dream.  

UD GAME JERSEY (1:36 Packs) - 1

SIGNATURE SENSATIONS (1:288 Packs) - 1

I beat the odds on these two cards.  In my opinion, jersey cards are played out and "blah" anymore.  I'd prefer to see scarce insert sets added over another basic jersey card.  You'll be able to find most of these on COMC for less than a buck in six more weeks.  However, this particular jersey card can go into my Blackhawks binder if it fits into a sheet.

Signature Sensations cards are case hits.  The checklist is usually weak for these and this year was no exception.  Esa Lindell is Group E, the most common.  I win here as well because this one will go into my fiance's Stars binder.  

SHINING STARS (CENTERS 1:16; LEFT WINGERS 1:24; GOALIES 1:48) - 3

SHINING STARS RED (CENTERS 1:48; LEFT WINGERS 1:72; GOALIES 1:144) - 1

Shining Stars is a boring insert set that needs to go.  I don't know how many years running it's been a thing, but I'm over it.  I will say that the red parallel looks REALLY nice with Taylor Hall donning a red sweater.  

UD PORTRAITS (1:6 Packs)

Speaking of insert sets that need to go...we have UD Portraits.  I believe we would struggle to find anyone that gives a damn about this set.  

CENTENNIAL STANDOUTS (1:5 Packs)

I'm a big fan of this set because it has retired players and not just current.  Any time that I can pull a Mario Lemieux card from a pack, I find it a win!  

Between this box, two blasters and two fat packs, I still find myself seven cards short of the completed base set.  It's frustrating, but it's part of the hobby.  It wasn't any different when I started collecting in 1987.  These are the cards I need, if you have them and would like to make a swap for some you need.

Series 1 Fatpacks From Santa

My fiance isn't keen on buying me cards.  She's concerned that she will buy the wrong thing and/or be taken advantage of.  When she does buy cards, it's unopened material that she knows I'm looking for.  Knowing that I am working on the Upper Deck Hockey set, she put a couple of retail fatpacks into my stocking. 

Each one contained one insert card and 31 base cards at a $5 price point.  If you want to put together the base set, the fatpacks are one of the best options for the price.  If you're looking to score the "nasty" hit, you should probably look elsewhere. 

The Young Guns cards are seeded 1:4 packs.  I wasn't fortunate enough to hit one, but a Connor McDavid UD Portraits is a quality consolation prize. 

I haven't seen which of the 61 base cards (one of the base cards was damaged), because I have a hobby box to break down as well.  It will be more efficient to collate all of them and work on it then.

Merry Christmas from Texas, Y'all!

I hope that everyone has a wonderful Christmas day.  Hopefully you're able to spend it with those that you love and if you can't, then spend it with family (HAHA!)  I only planned a short post to wish everyone the merriest of Christmases, but my lovely fiance changed that.

She said "yes" the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the greatest gift I've ever received.  This morning I received the most thoughtful gift that I have ever received.

I admit that I've been jealous of the collectors out there that have their own likeness on a "card."  Billy's post earlier this month with the added Trading Card Database Personal ID finally sent me to the point that I am going to have to get something made.

However, Crystal gifted me a bobblehead OF MYSELF!  He's a bit better looking than I, but I certainly see the resemblance.  She told me about some of the things that went into it.  She picked all the details, even down to the left hand in the pocket.  I know that being custom this was extremely expensive (and she's hinted at it).  The thought and time and money put into this...WOW!  It's certainly the greatest gift I've ever received.  I know that I'll smile every time I look at it.

Do I absolutely love it?

Box Break & Review - 2017-18 Parkhurst Hockey #2

I posted a box break and review earlier this week of a blaster that I found last Friday.  It was the only blaster in the Walmart.  At lunch Monday, I went to one in west Fort Worth and was fortunate enough to find FOUR blasters!  I hope to complete my set and help a few others out in doing the same. 

Base Cards - 107 cards (36% of the complete set) with no duplicates.

What made me happy was that of those 107 cards, 106 were different from my first blaster.  Through two blasters my set is 71% complete.  The bad thing about Parkhurst based on last year and what I've seen on Twitter so far is the collation.  It's possible that when I open the third blaster I don't get one card that I need.  Sad but true. 

The other base card win for me was opening the first pack and staring back at me was my first Alex DeBrincat card.  I made it my card of the year and don't regret it at all.

I truly think that nobody reading this will notice, but I am one card short in this box.  All the inserts are there, but there's one less base than the previous blaster.  That's because one pack had two insert in it.  The pack with the Alex Tuch Prominent Prospects contained another insert. 

2017-18 Upper Deck Parkhurst - Prominent Prospects - Autographs #PP-11 Tyson Jost

BOOM!  This is by far the top card I've pulled from my first two 2017-18 Parkhurst blasters.  Last season I didn't pull an autograph and honestly I'm not sure that there were any autos in the product.  These are 1:480 packs (1:40 blasters) and this is from Group B and slightly more scarce than some.  Tyson Jost is the rookie that I am pulling early.  I'd prefer if it was Alex DeBrincat, Charlie McAvoy or Brock Boeser, but it could be a lot worse.  If anyone sees this and is interested, let me know.  I'd trade it straight up for the Alex DeBrincat card.

My Favorite Card of 2017...MEOW!

One of the best parts of our hobby is how many different ways you can collect.  You can be a set builder.  You can be a prospector.  You can player collect.  There are many team collectors.  Hell, you can do all of these if you really want to.

I've done all of these in the past and to some extent still do them all, minus prospecting.  I've always been a player collector.  It started out with Dale Murphy.  Then it was Will Clark.  During my teenage years I collected Russ Davis and Bob Sura.  I still collect some former players but my most recent fanatical collection was Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw.  I put a LOT of money and a good bit of time into that collection. 

Then came June 24, 2016.  I can't say that The Andrew Shaw project died that day, but it was certainly put into a coma.  The Blackhawks traded Shaw to the Montreal Canadiens and my collection hasn't been the same.  

It's been about 18 months and I've debated on selling off the cards and moving on. While I've sold some, I've still kept at least one of each.  I still add low-end cards to the box but it's nothing like it was.  One card that I will NEVER get rid of is my first Shaw card.  It's one that I pulled myself and it means more to me than any money I'd ever get out of it.

I don't know that I'll ever try again to be a super collector.  I've been burnt by Blackhawks prospects that were later traded because of the salary cap (see: Tuevo Tervainen).  This past offseason my "new" favorite after the Shaw trade, Scott Darling, was traded.  I've already cut back on how much modern product I buy and this is a part of the reason.  

However, I denote this card my favorite of 2017.  It may not have the monetary value of others in P-Town Tom's contest, but that means nothing to me.

2017-18 Upper Deck Parkhurst #288 Alex DeBrincat

2017-18 Upper Deck Parkhurst #288 Alex DeBrincat (back)

The card will probably debut in Beckett as a $5 or $8 card, but it's the first Alex DeBrincat card I pulled from a pack myself and the first I had onhand.  The same happened with my favorite Shaw card.  Monday night I opened my second blaster of Parkhurst hockey and in the first pack, the first thing I saw was the back of the card and I just smiled.  I had it!  It will be placed in a one-touch just as the Shaw is and I will always know it was that EXACT copy that was my first.

Why Alex DeBrincat?  He's the "next big thing" for the Blackhawks.  Just look at that stat line on the back.  One knock on DeBrincat is his size, or lack thereof.  Another was that his numbers were a product of playing alongside Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome.  Those numbers you see from last season were sans McDavid and Strome.

The pick Chicago drafted DeBrincat with wasn't their originally.  It came to them in a trade for...Andrew Shaw.

Despite his size, DeBrincat has some toughness to him.  I found this on eliteprospects.com: "DeBrincat is a small player with a dynamic skill set and a pure sniper. He is undersized, but can be very nasty to play against and shies away from no one. He skates well and is very effective around the net. He is hard to contain for such a small player, and has great chemistry with anyone he plays with. A decade player in the OHL."

He hasn't shied away from larger players in his rookie season.  He's also showing up on the score sheet.  Through 33 games, he's scored 12 goals and has 11 assists.  He's also logging almost 15 minutes a game on the ice.

I know that his Young Guns and all parallels will have more value.  I'll eventually have at least the base Young Guns and the Canvas Young Guns, but I'm waiting until ePack hits.  I also bought five copies of the Upper Deck Game Dated Moments card highlighting his first career hat trick.  They aren't in-hand yet.  This card will always be the first.  That's why it's my favorite card of 2017.

It Arrived - T206 Scoops Carey

I don't usually bid on eBay auctions until the end.  This card is in my saved searches and when it came up I placed a somewhat strong bid immediately.  I knew I wouldn't win it for that price and I don't even know why I bid so early.  I forgot about it.  Then I received notification with a couple of hours that it was close to ending and was still high bidder.  I watched the countdown while sitting at a high school choir performance and couldn't believe that I won the auction.  More than a week later I'm still dumbfounded.

1909-11 T36 Scoops Carey Old Mill Back

This is the first double I've picked up from the set and it doesn't add to my "number."  It is one of the cards I want to complete a back run of since he attended my alma mater.  I believe there are four back variations and the two I have are the most common.  I'm usually very analytical and remember most things, but the nuances of the T206 set have been difficult for me to wrap my head around.

Box Break & Review - 2017-18 Parkhurst Hockey

After confirming Friday that Parkhurst hockey was sent to the States, I headed to a couple of Walmarts after work in search.  I only found one blaster (boo!), but at least I found one blaster.  I want to put the set together and perhaps complete the insert sets as well.

As I posted on A Pack To Be Named Later, it's difficult to be disappointed in the Walmart-exclusive Parkhurst product.  If you are, that's on you and you're a bad consumer.  The product delivers exactly what it should and perhaps more.  Last year, there was an unannounced "'Tis The Season" insert set that was pretty scarce.

The set is popular among set collectors.  It's a larger set, but it's down to 300 cards this season (it was 400 last year).  Also, no short prints are a part of the base set.  An additional bonus for some is the set containing some of the first game-action cards of Las Vegas Golden Knights players.

Every blaster contains 12 ten-card packs.  Typically you will receive one parallel or insert card per set.  I'm not going to "rate" sets and/or boxes, but if I did, I would probably give this a 10/10.  If you want inserts or high dollar cards, spend your money elsewhere for the card lottery.
