I'm not really sure who knows, but before I started this blog, I wrote primarily on my other site, Bean's Ballcard Blog. I'm going to be writing more hobby-related pieces (as opposed to writing here about personal collecting). If you haven't already, please follow, subscribe, etc. to my other blog.
Today I wrote a piece discussing iconic cards. Hopefully you'll take a look.
After a few days off over the weekend, Memorial Day and a couple days of job interviews, I posted a mailday post today on YouTube. If you haven't, please give me a subscription and some likes on videos. It does mean a lot and help keeps people going, no differently that bloggers with views and comments.
Today's post includes junk wax, buybacks and a 1990s autograph.

It's #Indianapolis500 RACE DAY!!
Today is my "other" Christmas. There is no doubting the parallel.
During that late-November and December time frame, it's really about how I feel. It's a great time of year. It's the build-up. Then, Christmas Day comes and goes and it's over.
The Month of May is the same for me. Six or so hours from now, it will all be over and I'll be counting down until next year.
This May has been a weird one for me. I'm used to listening to "Trackside" and "The Talk of Gasoline Alley" on my drives to and from work, as well as through the work day. However, I've been unemployed since the middle of April. It's been hard to get into the "flow" of things. I don't want to say my excitement for the month was gone, but I feel my dedication was.
I've already cleaned off the grill to make the post-race burgers. If you follow me on Twitter, you've probably seen some of my smoking (meat) and grilling pics. It's become my "other" hobby. I'm always excited to see how the food comes out. Hopefully it's better than the last time. I can say that my bride-to-be and stepson don't seem to have too many complaints.
My point on the grilling? It's kind of like the Christmas dinner. It's tradition (albeit a new one for me).
Today is another celebration for me. After 54 years, this will be the last Indianapolis 500 broadcast on ABC (for now). MSESPN and ABC have shit the bed on their (limited) IndyCar coverage for at least a decade. This day is long overdue. I'm not going to go on about how bad they are. If you care about IndyCar, you know. If you don't care about IndyCar, you don't care.
If you're interested to tune in for some fantastic, competitive auto racing, race coverage begins on ABC at 11am ET.
My predictions:
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: It's a pretty strong crop among the four drivers. Robert Wickens has been competitive all season and close to winning races. Both Matheus Leist and Zachary Claman DeMelo have had a lot of speed the last two weeks. Kyle Kaiser may be the "weakest" of the four, but he's the defending Indy Lights (the IndyCar equivalent of AAA baseball) champion.
I'm going with Leist. Wickens and Claman DeMelo have very limited oval experience and the track may eat both of them up today. Leist has been fast and is with the (much) more experienced team with A.J. Foyt.
LONGSHOT TO WIN: If you have a solid, working knowledge of recent IndyCar history, you won't consider this name a longshot. I don't think anyone reading this is a huge IndyCar fan, though, and has never heard of Carlos Munoz. This will be his only IndyCar race of the season and it would be no surprise to see him win.
PICK TO WIN: Alexander Rossi. Maybe it's personal because I want an American to win. But I pick the American with a European name.
DANICA: Not a serious factor. Spends most of the race in the 10-15 range until she does something stupid. Bye, Felicia! Don't let the door hit you.
Since every blog post NEEDS an image...I'll leave you with some of my 1960 Parkhurst Hawes Wax Indy (Parkhurst Indianapolis Speedway Winners) cards.

The Time Has Come
I've talked about it a lot, and finally it's time to start the buyback frankenset. I don't know who's interested, but I'm sure Shane is!

Mail Backlog
One of the reasons that I've decided to start the videos is for efficiency. When the mail days are heavy, I get backlogged. Then, I start dreading all the posts that I need to write.
In this video, I get caught up on incoming mail. I believe there are a couple of things you've seen before, but most is new. Included are some cards from Kerry of Cards on Cards. I have some things pulled aside for you and hope to have out next week, Kerry!
This is all a learning for me, so any constructive criticism is appreciated. You don't have to mention the tripod falling over...I picked up on that being a bad thing. HA!

Blogging Changes
I'm making some changes to how I blog. Some may like it. More may dislike it or not care at all. I talk about it in this short 3:31 video.
___________________________________________________________________________
I've decided to try selling on Sports Card Direct again. Hopefully you'll take a look at my page and see if there's anything you're interested in. I can always sell off the site and ship in a PWE if you're only looking for a card or two and don't want to pay $3 shipping. I'm going to start listing more cards daily. It's time to get out of a lot of my stuff.
If you shop online and haven't signed up and used ebates yet, you're missing out. I also use it on eBay to get money back from purchases there. Between referrals and cash back, I've gotten over $150 in a year. FREE CARDS! Another $40 was depostied into my Paypal account earlier this month.

2018 Trading Card Database Trade #24 - bwvjones -or- Bravos Buybacks
The three cards that I acquired in this trade didn't have any images on TCDB at the time of the trade. I was surprised to find that all three players were pictured in Braves uniforms, since all the cards I sent in return were Braves. I guess he just doesn't like buybacks and I benefit!
Collectors have really been excited about the 2017 and 2018 Heritage designs. I'm looking forward to this design, which will be used next year. I might actually attempt the Heritage set. Probably not. But maybe.
I love these uniforms. The Braves should bring them back full time.
Those badass warmup jackets need to come back too. Viva la 1970s!!!

First Scan Off the New Laptop -or- Another off the Most Wanted List
Just last week I posted about acquiring a card that was on my most wanted list. It's funny how in this hobby we can go weeks, months or even years between acquiring cards like that. Then there are other times, like this, where you get a couple of them just a few days apart.
Also new is my laptop. The old one was probably a decade old. It still works and I'm keeping it as a backup, but it was time. The new one works much faster with my scanner. WINNING!
The first card I scanned was this beauty!
Reading bores me. There's no other way to put it. However, I picked up a book on Lloyd Ruby a couple of years ago. Just learning about him, mostly who he was away from the track, made me a big fan of a man that I never saw race.
Just two "cards" were produced from Ruby's driving days and this is the lone one that featured his Indianapolis 500 driving. I've been wanting to pick this "card" up for a couple of years and this is the first time I've seen it come available. Yeah, it has some writing on it. I'll probably acquire a few more copies of this one over time. That writing could have kept the price down. With shipping, I happily paid around $25 for it.
Did you notice that in the last paragraph I used quotation marks twice? The reason I did that is because this isn't truly a trading card. It was distributed in quite a different manner.
From Beckett.com: "Marhoefer Meats of Muncie Indiana distributed this Indy car set in 1962 through its various meat products. The cards feature top IndyCar drivers in black and white photos. As is common with most issues distributed with meat products, the cards were produced with a wax film covering and are often found with product stains. The unnumbered cards are oversized (approximately 4" by 5-1/4") and contain rounded corners."
As I read that, I realized that it didn't fully give the story that I've read (somewhere). These "cards" were part of Marhoefer hot dog packaging. Because of the distribution method, many didn't survive and they aren't extremely easy to find. Also, they are not a normal size. Below I compared this card to a modern trading card.
My hope it to someday pick up the A.J. Foyt card as well, but when it pops up for sale, it's usually overpriced. There's one that pops up on eBay from time-to-time for $750. Along with this Lloyd Ruby and some other drivers from the set, a Foyt was listed at $250, which is still too high. At a true auction, the Foyt should be in the $100-150 range. I can wait.
Now that I have this card, the next part of the challenge has begun. How the heck do I store this???

Indianapolis 500 Signature Sunday - Johnny Rutherford
This Indianapolis 500 Signature Sunday post is different (and shorter) than the first two. In those two, I had met the drivers, and neither of them are with us anymore. I've never met Johnny Rutherford. That's highly unfortunate since he only lives about 30 minutes from where I do. These cards were all TTM requests. For the TTM fans, they were returned to me within a week. The address is on Sports Card Forum.
"Lone Star J.R." is one of just ten men to win the Indianapolis 500 three times, winning in 1974, 1976 and 1980. He also ran 35 NASCAR Cup races between 1963 and 1988. He won his first career race, a qualifying race for the Daytona 500. He went on to finish ninth in the 1963 Daytona 500, one of three career top-ten finishes at Daytona.
Anyway, on to the three cards I have (for now).
I have another TTM request that I need to get out. Once it comes back, it will be an AMAZING addition to my collection. I can't wait!
Next week I'll bring you my signatures of a four-time Indianapolis 500 winner. I feel that's the best way to honor Indianapolis 500 race day!

2018 Trading Card Database Trade #23 - minibbcards -or- Another Mini Trade
I posted in the TCDB forums that I was looking for buybacks and a (not-so) old trade partner got ahold of me about a trade. When I was in Birmingham I picked up a bunch of mini cards knowing he'd be interested. It was easy to make our trade.
I wonder how many modern card collectors/baseball fans have no idea that for a time, Bobby Thigpen held the single-season saves record.
It's not exactly a beauty, but it is a card number in the 700s and may be in the set for awhile.
Thanks for the trade!

A Card You've Seen A Lot Here -or- T206 Scoops Carey
You've certainly seen this Scoops Carey card if you read my blog with any regularity. However, I couldn't pass up a raw copy of the card on COMC, considering the price. I got it for the price of a couple of those Bowman blasters everyone's buying in hopes of hitting the lottery.
This is the second post in a row that doesn't change my monster number, but I'm more than okay with that.
My monster number now stands at 28 (of 524). On T206Insider, my set is now at 12.1, good for 48th. You can find a gallery of what I have on my Collector Focus page.
If you'd like to learn more about the T206 set, there are plenty of resources. A very popular one is Scot Reader's "Inside T206." Others I like are Net 54 and T206 Insider (links above to both), as well as the blog on That T206 Life.

If you're on Twitter, please give me a follow. You can also find me on Trading Card Database. I love trading cards, when it makes sense. Happy collecting!

2018 Trading Card Database Trade #22 - bkim -or- Thankfully, I Didn't Give Up Much
I love most of the buyback trades, but this one feels like it was for the most basic of buybacks. Also, there was supposed to be a fifth card, but the trading partner couldn't find it. BOO!
Didn't even notice the whatever on the card until I cropped the scan.

I don't believe there's anyway to sugar coat it, but this isn't the most inspiring group of buybacks. I can't see any of them staying in the set for too long, unless they are just unopposed. Luckily, I didn't give up much in return for them.

1960 Fleer #116 Hank Stram -or- Crossing Off One From the "Most Wanted" List
I wouldn't change a thing about how I grew up. I lived somewhat in the country, but in a house that didn't have air conditioning or cable. Those were two things I REALLY wanted. Since I didn't havce cable, my current sports info came from the newspaper, local news or radio. Seriously, how old am I?
The first half of my teenage years I spent fall Sunday nights listening to Jack Buck and Hank Stram call Sunday Night Football on the radio. Those two are easily a part of my "voices of my youth" list. While I have fond memories of both, it wasn't until a handful of years later that I know more about Hank Stram. Most of my knowledge came from the "NFL Films" vault back when ESPN played them and didn't suck.
Anyway, the card that I picked up wasn't hard to come into, I just hadn't crossed it off before. I'm glad that I hadn't. Getting this was pure happenstance. It showed up in my Facebook feed from a vintage football cards group I'm in, but hadn't looked at in more than a year. Sometimes you just get lucky.
The card is in great shape, other than that "x" written in pen on the back. A quick feeBay search shows that the cheapest one of these ending recently went for $17. I got this one for $10, delivered. I'm happy that I waited!

2018 Trading Card Database Trade #21 - CardsThatTimeForgot -or- A Favorite Buyback
This is one of my favorite trades on TCDB so far, because of one card that I picked up.
The combination of writing this blog post and the recent sale of some Mike Trout card for $400k has me thinking about "iconic" cards and I'll probably write something about iconic cards on my other blog (Bean's Ballcard Blog). I'll stop short of calling this an iconic card, but it's probably among my personal top 10 cards of the time I've been collecting. The opportunity to add it as a buyback was something that I couldn't pass on. During my first year of card collecting (1987) this was one of the cards I was always hoping to find in a pack as McGwire hit more and more homers on his way to the rookie home run record.
Meh.
I'm still not sure if I'm going to do this set.

T206 Kid Elberfeld -or- Which One Would You Rather Have?
Outside of my Scoops Carey cards, I didn't have any T206 duplicates until this one arrived from COMC last week. I picked this one up over a year ago. I was willing to pay $20 for it because it's scarcity ranking is 71, per T206 Insider. I relisted it with a ridiculous price figuring nobody would buy it and I'd eventually have it shipped home. It's home now.
1909-11 The American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Kid Elberfeld (New York Variation) |
As mentioned, this is my second copy of the card. It's obviously in poor shape and not as visually appealing as my other copy.
However, that copy is graded "authentic" because it's trimmed. I'm also not a fan of cards in slabs, unless it's a high price card or I have another reason. I ask you, which of the two would you prefer to have in your collection, and why? I choose the raw copy, but I'm sure that many will disagree with me. I'm interested to hear other bloggers' thoughts.

Indianapolis 500 Signature Sunday - Bryan Clauson
My second Indianapolis 500 Signature Sunday takes me back to the last Indianapolis 500 that I attended. My bride-to-be was completely onboard with roadtripping it from Texas to Indianapolis two years ago and attending the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500. If you wonder why we drove, two round-trip flights were going to be more than $1300. It was a lot of driving and road time, but we did the entire trip for well less than that.
This wasn't the year that I got autographs from Bryan Clauson, but it was the last time that I saw him race. The Indianapolis kid even led the race (under caution) and I was fortunate enough to get a picture of him leading, no matter how bad of a picture it was.
I had every intention of sending this picture to him to sign, but I never had the opportunity. Less than four months later, Clauson was killed in an on-track incident in Nebraska. We always want to find the bright side in dark times. Bryan Clauson was an organ donor and his death did save lives.
I met Clauson in 2012 at a get-together (not sure what else you'd call it) in his hometown (and where I lived) of Noblesville, IN in 2012. The "local boy" was running the Indianapolis 500 that year for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing.
He finished 30th, falling out of the race with mechanical problems.
Clauson was kind enough to sign a couple of cards that I had. Asking him to sign a memorabilia card was a conscious decision since so few IndyCar drivers would have a mem card.
For those that don't know, Clauson was on-track to race is NASCAR's top series, potentially full-time. As is oftentimes the case in racing, bad luck kept him from making it to the Winston Cup (or whatever it's called now) Series. Twice during the 2008 series he was set to make his debut but both times qualifying was rained out and he wasn't eligible to start the race. He was supposed to race the full 2009 season in the Busch (or whatever it's called now) Series. That may have provided him another chance at later running in the top series but his team's sponsor left and he could not find another ride and Clauson disappeared from stock car racing.
Clauson returned to his roots, running USAC and other open-wheel cars, which gave him the opportunity to run the Indianapolis 500 three times. The 2016 racing season was supposed to be a whirlwind season for Clauson. Per wikipedia: "Clauson was attempting to compete in 200 races in 2016 which is being billed as "The Chasing 200 Tour, Circular Insanity". The tour included the 100th Indianapolis 500, USAC Midget and Sprint cars, World of Outlaws (WoO) sprint cars, and wingless sprint cars. He normally ran about 150 shows per year; he hoped to double up by racing some 360 wingless sprint car class cars at 410 (WoO / USAC) winged sprint car events. Clauson traveled the country living out of a mobile home."
Since I'm writing this post, I will take it as a chance to show the few other Clauson cards that I have.
Even though you're gone, BC, you're not forgotten. I still have my two t-shirts (just wore one of them last week), coozies and my BC Forever sticker on my car. I wish you were running the race in two weeks.
